The belief in the Day of Judgment is one of the fundamental beliefs of Islam. Muslims believe that this world is temporary and that every human being will eventually be resurrected and brought before Allah to account for his or her deeds. The Qur’an repeatedly reminds humanity that the Hour will come, although its exact time is known only to Allah.
Islamic teachings also describe a number of signs that will occur before the Day of Judgment. These signs are traditionally divided into minor signs and major signs. Some minor signs appeared during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or have occurred throughout history, while the major signs are extraordinary events that will occur as the final Hour approaches.
The Qur’an states: “Do they await but that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come some of its indications.” (Qur’an 47:18).
The purpose of these signs is not simply to satisfy human curiosity about the future. Rather, they serve as reminders that worldly life has an end and that people should prepare themselves through faith, repentance and righteous action.
Minor Signs of the Day of Judgment
The minor signs include numerous developments described by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They encompass changes in society, morality, knowledge, wealth, relationships and the general condition of humanity.
Among the signs mentioned in Islamic traditions are the widespread appearance of trials and tribulations, increased killing, the spread of ignorance, and the weakening of religious commitment. Other narrations describe people competing in the construction of increasingly magnificent buildings and changes in social relationships.
These signs should not automatically be interpreted as proof that a particular modern event is the fulfillment of a prophecy. Muslims have historically been cautioned against confidently assigning every political, technological or social development to a specific prophecy. The timing and precise fulfillment of many signs belong to matters of the unseen, which require evidence from revelation.
The more important lesson is that the believer should not become so absorbed in predicting the future that he neglects his present responsibilities. The Qur’an and Sunnah repeatedly emphasize worship, justice, repentance, charity and good character.
The Major Signs
The major signs are different in character from the ordinary developments associated with the minor signs. A well-known hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim states that the Hour will not occur until ten major signs appear. These include the Dajjal, the descent of Jesus son of Mary, Gog and Magog, the Smoke, the Beast, the rising of the sun from the west, three major earth collapses, and a fire emerging from the region of Yemen that will drive people toward their place of gathering.
The order and precise relationship between all these signs has been discussed by Islamic scholars, and not every narration presents them in exactly the same sequence. Therefore, it is safer to describe what the sources say rather than claim a definitive chronology where the texts do not provide one.
The Dajjal
One of the most prominent signs is the emergence of Al-Masih ad-Dajjal, commonly translated as the Antichrist or False Messiah.
According to authentic hadith, the Dajjal will be associated with an enormous trial for humanity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave repeated warnings about him and described features that would enable believers to recognize him.
Sahih Muslim describes the Dajjal as having a physical defect in one eye and describes the extraordinary deception associated with what appears to be paradise and fire.
The significance of the Dajjal is therefore not merely that he represents a frightening future figure. His appearance represents a tremendous test of faith, in which falsehood will appear convincing and people will be challenged to distinguish truth from deception.
Muslims are consequently taught to seek refuge from the trial of the Dajjal and to strengthen their faith rather than attempting to identify contemporary individuals as the Dajjal without reliable evidence.
The Return of Jesus
Another major sign is the descent of Jesus son of Mary (Isa ibn Maryam).
In Islamic belief, Jesus is an honoured prophet and Messiah, but he is not regarded as divine. The hadith concerning the signs of the Hour explicitly includes his descent among the events preceding the end.
The traditions concerning the Dajjal also connect the descent of Jesus with the defeat of the Dajjal. Thus, Jesus' return forms an important part of Islamic eschatology and demonstrates the ultimate triumph of divine truth over deception.
Gog and Magog
The Qur’an also speaks explicitly about Gog and Magog (Ya’juj and Ma’juj).
In Surah Al-Anbiya, Allah says that when Gog and Magog are released, they will descend rapidly from every elevation. The following verse connects their emergence with the approach of the true promise.
The subject of Gog and Magog has generated numerous interpretations throughout Islamic history. Muslims should distinguish between what the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah actually establish and later speculation about their geographical identity or the location of their barrier.
The essential message is that their emergence is one of the extraordinary events associated with the approach of the final Hour.
The Smoke
The Qur’an contains a passage in Surah Ad-Dukhan referring to a conspicuous smoke. The Smoke is also included among the ten major signs in the hadith of Hudhayfah ibn Usayd recorded in Sahih Muslim.
Classical scholars have discussed the precise interpretation and timing of the Smoke, including how Qur’anic references relate to the prophetic descriptions. This is another example where Muslims should rely upon established revelation rather than attempting to force a particular modern event into an end-times prophecy.
The Beast of the Earth
Another major sign is the appearance of the Beast (Dabbat al-Ard).
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ included the Beast among the signs that will occur before the Hour. Sahih Muslim places its appearance alongside other extraordinary signs such as the rising of the sun from the west and the emergence of Gog and Magog.
The Qur’an also refers to a creature that will emerge from the earth and speak to people concerning their rejection of Allah's signs. This event emphasizes the seriousness of disbelief and the certainty that human beings will ultimately confront the truth.
The Sun Rising From the West
Among the most striking signs is the sun rising from the west.
Normally, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Islamic tradition teaches that near the end of the world this order will be reversed. The Prophet ﷺ specifically included the rising of the sun from the west among the major signs of the Hour.
This sign also carries an important spiritual lesson. According to a hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud, once people witness this extraordinary event, belief at that point will no longer benefit the person who had not previously believed or earned righteousness through faith.
In other words, Islam teaches that repentance should not be deliberately postponed. A person should turn toward Allah while the opportunity remains.
The Three Great Earth Collapses
The hadith concerning the ten major signs also mentions three extraordinary collapses of the earth: one in the east, one in the west and one in the Arabian Peninsula.
These events belong to the unseen future described by revelation. Their exact nature, location and circumstances should therefore not be filled in with unsupported speculation.
The Fire From Yemen
The final sign mentioned in the well-known hadith is a fire that will emerge from the region of Yemen and drive people toward their place of gathering. Sahih Muslim and Sunan Abi Dawud both record this description.
The imagery is powerful: humanity will be driven toward a final gathering, leaving behind the ordinary circumstances of worldly existence.
The Actual Day of Judgment
The signs before the Hour should not be confused with the Day of Judgment itself.
When the final events occur, the present order of creation will be transformed. The Qur’an describes dramatic cosmic events, including the sun being folded up, the stars losing their light, the mountains being set in motion, and the seas being affected. Surah At-Takwir presents these events as part of the overwhelming reality of the Last Day.
The Qur’an also emphasizes that the Hour will come suddenly. Human beings may become accustomed to the world and assume that it will continue indefinitely, but Islamic revelation teaches that its existence is temporary.
The resurrection will then take place, and every person will stand before Allah. Wealth, social status, nationality and worldly possessions will no longer provide protection. What will matter is faith and what a person has done with the life that Allah gave them.
What Should Muslims Learn From These Signs?
The signs of the Day of Judgment are not given merely to encourage fear or speculation. Their deeper purpose is to awaken human beings.
First, they remind Muslims that this world is temporary. No matter how powerful a civilization becomes, worldly existence has an appointed end.
Second, they encourage repentance. A person should not wait until the final moments of life before turning to Allah.
Third, they emphasize the importance of faith and righteous action. Knowing about the signs has little benefit if that knowledge does not transform a person's behaviour.
Finally, they remind believers that the exact time of the Hour is known only to Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught people about its signs, but Muslims are not given a date on which to expect the end of the world.
The correct response, therefore, is not to become obsessed with predicting when the Hour will arrive. It is to live responsibly while preparing for the meeting with Allah.
Conclusion
The signs before the Day of Judgment occupy an important place in Islamic belief. The minor signs describe developments that serve as warnings, while the major signs include extraordinary events such as the emergence of the Dajjal, the descent of Jesus, the release of Gog and Magog, the Smoke, the Beast, the rising of the sun from the west, the great earth collapses and the fire that will drive people toward the place of gathering.
The Qur’an and Sunnah present these signs not simply as mysterious predictions but as reminders of accountability. The world that human beings know will not last forever, and every individual will ultimately return to Allah.
For a Muslim, the most important question is therefore not, “When will the Day of Judgment begin?” but rather, “Am I prepared to meet my Creator?”
That preparation begins now: through sincere faith, prayer, repentance, good character, justice, charity and obedience to Allah. The signs point toward the end of worldly life, but their message is directed toward how we live today.
